I'm not much of a special effects artist but when Halloween comes around I can't help but get super creative. Many who know me personally know that I'm obsessed with Zombies (and those who don't, well now you know haha), so when my husband told me that he wanted to be a Zombie for Halloween, I thought I had died and gone to Zombie heaven.
I didn't take any pictures of the process due to the time crunch (we were heading to a get together and haunted houses) but here is a picture of the final product. Enjoy!

Makeup Artist Resumes
Lately I've been seeing that most newbie makeup artist are a bit confused on how their resume's should look. I understand the confusion and trust me, I was once in that position. So, for all the lovely aspiring makeup artists out there who want to know where to start but don't quite have all the super clients, here are some examples of what a pro resume should look like and what to do if you don't quite have enough material to put and make a resume.
Resume Examples:
Alexis Vogel
Liza Zomer
Jamie Weiss
And mine: Yisell Santos
Beefy Bio:
If you feel that you don't have enough to put on your resume, then wait it out till you get more clients. As an alternative, you can always put some of the work you've done in your bio section. Play with wording to make it sound really good but DO NOT, I repeat, do not lie. It WILL come back to bite you in the bottom and it's not pretty.
And the BEST awesome example of how to put "resume content" into your bio goes to: Deanna Bell. This has it all! Experience, resume content and telling them how awesome you are without boasting. Mine is pretty cool too so feel free to take a look my Bio section as well.
I hope I've helped to clarify some things and if you have any questions...feel free to ask away!
Batman: Under the Red Hood
Makeup I did was for: Dan DiDio, Paul Levitz and Dennis O'Neil.
New "Product" Work
I love skin so much I just had to do a "product" shoot. There really isn't anything better than gorgeous glowing skin so when we got Analisa to work with us (who already has wonderful skin) I was totally psyched! Here's the lovely results...Enjoy!

Needless to say, I walked out of there empty handed and completely put off by all this. Shame on you Inglot...shame on you.

I always love me an Asian girl...especially when they're mixed with Brazilian.
Japanese + Brazilian = One gorgeous exotic woman!
Chocolate
After waiting so long for FINALLY getting a dark skinned girl in my port (very much desperately needed), I got Sara! Gorgeous skin and super cool to work with.
Solution to Bleeding Lip Tars
Lip Tars...about the only con I can think of...they bleed. Here is a simple step by step that you can follow so that you won't get the bleeding and mess.
Step 1:
Squeeze a TINY bit onto your fingertip (think half a pea size)
Step 2:
TAP in the product with your fingers. Don't spread it with a lip brush. The reason why you might be getting the bleeding is because spreading it causes it to SIT on the lips. When you tap it into the lip, the lips are absorbing the color (kind of like a lip stain). If you're having a hard time getting the lips lined perfectly, you can use a lip brush after tapping and using ONLY the product that is already on the lips. Adding more product will cause it to bleed and become messy.
FINISH: Matte / Satin
Step 3:
Use translucent powder to set the lips. This will keep the tars from moving around and creating that bleeding effect.
FINISH: Matte
Step 4 (optional): The reason why step 4 is optional is because it doesn't HAVE to be done but it all depends on you. For extra reinforcement of the tars, put some concealer around the lips and blend.
You can follow up with the gloss of your choice if you want to go with a glossy look or keep it matte depending on what look you're looking for.
NEW Face Atelier Women of Color Foundations
I had the pleasure of launching the NEW Face Atelier Women of Color Collection at The Makeup Show NYC this past May. As a faithful FA Foundations user I have to say that I have been looking forward for this collection to launch for quite some time. They are absolutely amazing! Nothing has changed, the formula still has its same awesomeness and the colors are GORGEOUS! The NEW colors consist of #10, #11, #12, 0++ and HEAT.
Asian Beauty
Finally got myself a gorgeous Asian Beauty by the name of Aisa. Super nice and sweet and seriously had FLAWLESS skin. Here are the results:
Basic Starting Foundations
Note: Brushes/Tools Linked is what I have and use in MY kit.
Face Atelier - 95% of the time this is what I reach for. Awesome dewey finish and amazing coverage, especially on mature skin.
Best Applied With: Foundation Brush, Skunk Brush
Best Applied With: Pointed Foundation Brush, Beauty Blender
Best Applied With: Foundation Brush, Skunk Brush
RCMA - Yet another wonderful product for film. It's been around since FOREVER and it's the go to of foundations when it comes to film. Works amazing on pretty much everyone. Best part? You can use them as is or use the thinner to make them into a liquid.
(COMES IN A PALETTE)
Best Applied With: If in cream form - Pointed Foundation Brush, Beauty Blender. If in liquid form - Foundation Brush, Skunk Brush
Graftobian - Great creamy finish and a little goes a long way. It has a lot of slip and slick so too much will result in the cakey look, but when used correctly, it will give the skin a gorgeous finish. It's best if you start lightly and work up to the coverage needed. I use it mostly as concealers and for women/men of color.

Best Applied With: Beauty Blender, Pointed Foundation Brush
Wedding Makeup...To do or not to do...
Let me start this blog by saying that this post is mostly for brides. I've decided to blog about this because I've honestly have had one too many brides contact me only to flee at the mention of the price.
Assisting and Interning
If you want to assist other artists it's always good to send an email. Let us know that you would be interested in assisting and leave your name, number and a possible link to some work you have done. I know not everyone is going to have a professional site or professional pictures right when they start out but a link to something (even if its attached pictures) so that we can get an idea of what your work looks like. Contacting us with no example of your work what so ever will most likely end up in getting your email ignored.
DO NOT get annoying or stalkish. If we respond saying that we will hold on to your information, then take that as it is. Don't keep emailing us and calling us. That will make us (especially me) not want to work with you. Keeping in touch is different than sending constant "stalky" emails. We're human and sometimes forget and emails get lost in the jumble of other emails. After a good amount of time, send a friendly reminder that you're still interested in assisting.
DO NOT ask the senior artist to "recommend" photographers or contacts to you. We built these relationships throughout the years of hard work and non stop networking. We aren't going to just simply hand over our contacts to you. Do your own networking and build your own relationships.
Below are some basic "rules" to follow. These rules are there because, yes, unfortunately these have all happened to me and other artists I know.
Assisting:
::Artists Belongings::
Many artists don't like their stuff touched and I am one of them. Do not by any means go into the key artists kit and start looking around and putting your fingers in their stuff. It's not yours, don't touch it.
::Listen to the Key::
Do what the key tells you to do. If he/she wants you to clean brushes with soap and water, use soap and water. If they want you to use a brush cleaner, use a brush cleaner etc. Don't go ahead and do what you feel like doing. It will only get you in trouble and make the key frustrated.
::Business Cards::
NEVER EVER give out your business cards when assisting...EVER. By doing so you are not only insulting the key artist but it looks like you're trying to take the client. You are there to assist, NOT to network, give your card out or get too chatty with the photographer/other crew members etc. You are there to LEARN and should consider the fact that assisting is a learning experience. Not a chance to open your mouth and chit chat.
::Chatting::
An assistant is there to make the key look their best and that means by being invisible (whether you are doing makeup or not). You do what you are told and if it feels like there is nothing to do, then just sit tight and wait for further instruction from the Key. This is not the time to chit chat and make friends. You are not to speak to the talent, and/or production team at any time.
::Do Not Fall Asleep::
Sometimes things get slow or there isn't much to do but the last thing you want to do is fall asleep! The key might or might not say anything to you but know that they are always watching your performance. An assistant that falls asleep is a lazy assistant. That means that you're bored, uninterested and you'd rather be home. Well guess what? A bunch of way more dedicated aspiring makeup artist would give their left arm to take your place. And they will because rest assured, you'll never get called back to assist again.
::Do Not Disappear::
If you need to use the restroom or you get hungry and want to pass by the crafty table, that's totally fine! You're human, you have needs. But don't just disappear. Let the key know that you need a slight break. If they don't know where you are and they need you, it's not going to look good if you're not around.
::Put the Phone Away::
Nothing makes me more crazy than as assistant constantly on the phone. Put it on vibrate and put it away. I understand some have kids and responsibilities which is why I never tell anyone to turn off the phone. But if it's not an emergency, you should not be on your phone. No texting, no emailing, no checking your Facebook/Twitter/Instagram/Whatever! If you need to make or take a phone call, please excuse yourself and make it quick. Being constantly on your phone means you're not paying attention.
::Dress Code/Hygiene::
We are artists and everyone expresses themselves in different ways but, if you're coming to set wearing short shorts, a V Neck super low cut shirt and your boobs look like they're about to spill out of your shirt at any minute or your clothing are dirty...something is terribly wrong. If you're not sure about the dress code, please DO ASK the key artist. We rather have you ask, than you guess and then you show up to set not in the proper dress code. Try to avoid wearing heavy scented perfume. You never know if it's going to bother the talent, so its best to be safe and wear none. Deodorant is a MUST.
::Misc.::
If the key artist, for any reason feels that they aren't a good fit for the job and feels that it's better to just not complete or take the job, as an assistant you are to do what the key does. If they leave, you leave. In no way, shape or form are you to assume the job of the key for yourself. You work for the key makeup artist and it is the key that hired you. This person put their trust in you and brought you along for a close up, first hand experience. Biting the hand that feeds and letting greed blind you will only result in never working with your mentor again. Remember, this industry is small and word gets around. The last thing you want is to be known as the one that stole a client or position. Stepping on people to climb the ladder is NOT the way to go.
Now, every artist is different and sometimes the rules vary especially when you already know the environment or have worked with that particular artist often. But this is pretty much the basics. If you're interested in the more in depth "rules", please feel free to follow the link below:

Jewelry Shoot
Last month I posted that I had done a jewelry shoot but, at the time all I had was just a little sample of what was to come. Here's another taste (full story on my site). Enjoy!!
Bright is IN
As I walk through the streets of NYC, I've noticed that more people are wearing brighter lipsticks. Why? I'm not sure. Perhaps it's because the 80's are coming back at full force this year and its the new trend? Or maybe people have finally realized that wearing clear gloss ALL the time is boring? Whatever the reason is, I think its super AWESOME that women are finally opening up to brighter and bolder lips. Here are a few color choices that I think would look great for both the Spring and Summer season (and that I'm currently sporting as well)

Makeup Organizers
In the world of a makeup artist, everything has to be de-potted and condensed or else we'll go crazy. Especially and most specifically...eyeshadows! Different artists de-pot and organize in different ways, whether it be sticking them on cardboard and making a book out of eyeshadows or putting them into empty magnetic palettes.
Face Chart
I don't know about any of you but I HATE that MAC Face Chart. It's so boring and (dare I say) UGLY! So here is to a new and prettier face chart. Click on picture for full printable size. Enjoy!
Newest Lip Tars
Today I went over to the OCC Studio to pick up the NEW Lip Tars and I have to say they are nothing short of AMAZING (but we already knew that). I love the new colors especially Complex. I was mixing to create that nude color but now I don't have to anymore (which is great when you're pressed for time).
Here's what the NEW colors look like:
Makeup Cooldown
Spring and Summer are on their way and with that comes humidity and disgusting heat. What does that mean for your makeup kit? Lipsticks and cream products get all sweaty and gross looking. It can also mess with the consistency of your products such as your lipsticks and cream foundations. Keeping your makeup in a cool dry place is key. Avoid storing it in the bathroom because of all the constant changes in temperature every time someone takes a bath or shower can, over time, affect your products.
A nice place to keep your makeup from getting moldy or attracting bacteria and dirt is to store them in a cosmetic cooler (shown above), keeping them at the ideal temperature of 45 - 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The downside? A cosmetic cooler can run you anywhere from $80 to $200 depending on the brand and where you shop for it. (YIKES!)
A really awesome inexpensive alternative is to store your products in the refrigerator. This prolongs the shelf-life, makes your makeup last longer and the cool products feel so nice on the skin especially in the summer.
Make Up For Ever HD Blush
For those of you who haven't tried the Make Up For Ever HD creme blushes I have one word...A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! I'm not a huge fan of creme blushes because to me they always seem to go on weird. Either too spotty, blotchy or just kinda dry. But not the MUFE HD blush. I bought one just to try it out and the application is seriously amazing!
Squeeze a pea size amount onto the back of your hand, dip your finger into the product and put about 2 or 3 dots on the cheekbones and use the stipple brush to blend, blend, blend...and viola! It looks like you've airbrushed the blush on. It takes a little time to get used to so don't get frustrated if you don't get it the first couple of times. Just keep practicing.
Another way to apply it is to just spread and blend with your fingers. If you're using your fingers and no brush to blend, remember that all of the product is on there and there is no brush to pick up any of the product therefore you'd have to use less because a little goes a LONG way (think half pea size amount).
Next time you're near a MUFE spot, pick yourself up one of these babies. I guarantee you'll love it!
Julianne Moore: The NEW face of BVGALRI
What happened to our beautiful Jessica Stam as the face of BVLGARI? Not that Julianne Moore isn't beautiful but I've gotten so used to Jess Stam that I was taken aback when I saw Julie Moore's face (and BODY!!) plastered on the ad campaigns.
I think its a wonderful change. Julianne Moore is gorgeous and who can resist that fire red hair, amazing body (who knew?) and legs that go on forever. Whomever the mastermind was behind this change...I hereby thank you! You're a genius!
Makeup Artist Agencies
Many of us don't know how many Makeup Artist Agencies there are out there. In fact, I seem to discover one every week! I figured I'd list all of the agencies (that I can think of and know of so far) so that all you beautiful and wonderful aspiring artists (and the already pros) can take a look at them. See what type of agency they are, what type of work they have and who are the artists. Since I am in the New York market most of the one's I have are NY based so please excuse me for the lack of knowledge for other places. I will update this any time I can if I find new ones.
